Beginning Animation

The goal of this course is to provide students with a fundamental, theoretical, as well as practical understanding and experience working in computer-aided 3D animation.  It begins with a basic introduction of 3D space. Students learn about creating objects; then surfacing and lighting them, and how to build a scene. Then students explore basic animation techniques by constructing and animating a simple game.   The curriculum is composed of four 9-week sessions of lessons and tutorials with a focus on project-based learning.  Lessons and tutorials are designed to teach students the fundamental artistic and technical design principles associated with 3D animation and training in the use of 3D software.

Upon completion of software training, students will complete animation projects that will introduce them to the fundamentals of animation production and give students the opportunity to apply artistic and technical skills acquired during their regular coursework.  The pre-requisite for this class is completion of either a Basic Design, Drawing, or Painting class. Please take a look at the students' works here.

Beginning Animation is an in-school  dual-enrollment course offered through Thomas Nelson Community College's partnership with area schools.  Through this program students have the opportunity to earn both college and high school credit for approved courses taken in their home high schools.  This partnership provides high school students with a first-hand exposure to the rigor of college-level work.  Students enrolled in Animation Level 1  have an opportunity to earn 4 college credits upon completion of the course.  For more information on the dual-enrollment program, you can download a newsletter at TNCC. You will need the latest Acrobat Reader to open this file. You can download it here.
